A HORROR-THEMED maze remains closed at Thorpe Park today after a fire broke out in the attraction.Firefighters from Egham battled the blaze in the Saw Alive horror maze - a live action maze based on the gruesome Saw series of horror films on Tuesday evening.
The Egham crew were joined at around 7.47pm by fire engines from Staines and Chertsey at the theme park on Staines Road, Thorpe, which was closed to the public at the time.
Firefighters used two hosereels and three donned breathing apparatus to tackle the flames, the cause of which is as yet unknown.
One of the Egham watch firefighters said it was one of the most bizarre jobs they have been called out on.
He said: "It was quite a strange one, going in and putting the fire out and obviously got all the horror props in there still.
"They kept bumping into dummies."
The much-hyped maze opened last year off the back of the success of the park's other Saw themed attraction, Saw - The Ride.
Visitors to the maze walk in groups with their hands on the shoulders of the person in front, and pass through various rooms themed on scenes from the horror films. During normal operating hours, actors from the park jump out and scare the visitors.
The attraction suffered minor damage and has now been temporarily closed while the cause of the blaze is determined and safety checks are undertaken.
A Thorpe Park spokesman said: "Our well rehearsed emergency procedures were immediately put into operation. The emergency services were called at 7.51pm with two fire vehicles on site within 5 minutes and the fire was brought under control very quickly.
"The health and safety of our guests is our primary objective and the Thorpe Park Management Team, in conjunction with the Fire Service, are investigating the cause of the fire.
"The attraction will remain closed until the investigation is complete and while we assess the extent of the damage.
"It will re-open when we have brought the maze back to full operating standards and had it passed through the relevant Health and Safety inspections.
"The rest of the Park remains open for business as usual."
