ATTRACTIONS: Revived Southport Pleasureland back in business
by Paula Owens
Fairground rides were up and running once again over the weekend on the site of the former Pleasureland fairground in Southport.
Retitled New Pleasureland, it opened its gates to the public on Saturday.
Amongst the new all-spinning, shaking and swinging rides are the Mexican Wave, Megaspin, Orbiter and Miami Surfer.
One of the highlights is set to be the Frisbee, in which passengers are strapped into a rotating carriage that swings in a pendulum motion.
Updated versions of classic attractions are also on site, including a ghost train, log flume and funhouse.
As the season continues, some larger rides, such as rollercoasters, will also be introduced.
Leisure operator Dreamstorm obtained a temporary lease to run funfairs on the site from Sefton Council, which bought the land earlier this year.
Managing director Norman Wallis said the park's first two days in operation had been successful.
He said: "We've been working very hard to make this happen for Southport and we just hope people will support us.
"It's going well so far and people seem to be enjoying themselves. I'm sure we'll get even more people visiting as the word spreads that we have opened."
He added the firm has long-term ambitions within Southport's leisure industry., saying: "We hope to have some kind of attraction in Southport for a very, very long time to come."
After 93 years in the town, Pleasureland was closed down last August by then owner Blackpool Pleasure Beach, after being deemed "unsustainable".
Admission to New Pleasureland is free and the fair will open daily from 10am until late.
