Six Flags Fiesta Texas adds new water park ride for 2004 W. Scott Bailey Explaining that the popularity of "tubing in Texas" was part of their inspiration, Six Flags Fiesta Texas officials announced Wednesday that the San Antonio theme park will add the Tornado ride to its Armadillo Beach water park for 2004.
The Tornado will drop park guests from 75 feet in the air into a 60-foot-tall, 132-foot-long multi-colored funnel of water. Riders will navigate the 5,000 gallons of rushing water coursing through the funnel on a four-person raft.
The ride has won numerous amusement industry awards for its unique design, including the 2003 Golden Ticket Award for Best Water Park Ride. It was created by ProSlide, a Canadian company.
The new ride will carry 700 passengers per hour at a maximum speed of 35 feet per second. The unique funnel feature will be painted in a bright blue and yellow checkerboard pattern.
Park officials would not divulge the cost of the new attraction. Fiesta Texas spokeswoman Sydne Purvis would only say that the new ride represents a major investment.
Fiesta Texas opens its 2004 season on March 6. The Tornado will open along with the rest of Armadillo Beach in May. Admission to Fiesta Texas will include free admission to Armadillo Beach and the Tornado attraction.
In its latest attempt to attract new visitors, Six Flags Fiesta Texas on Wednesday unveiled a new water park ride similar to the tubing experience South Texans enjoy. Dubbed the Tornado, this 75-foot-high attraction shoots visitors around a funnel-shaped contraption on a cloverleaf inner tube that seats four.
"This is something for the whole family to enjoy," Martin Bozer, Fiesta Texas' director of operations, said. "It's for young adults looking for a higher thrill and something that can cross over to many groups."
The Tornado will be the third addition to Fiesta Texas' Armadillo Beach Waterpark.
In 1999, the park added the Lone Star Lagoon and the Texas Treehouse to the 11-year-old water park.
Fiesta Texas reopens March 6, but the Tornado and the rest of the water park will open in May.
Proslide Technology Inc., a Canadian company that makes the water rides, sold four similar rides last year to theme parks, including Six Flags New England.
Proslide recently received Amusement Today magazine's 2003 Golden Ticket Award for best water park ride and also fetched two national industry group awards.
Gary Slade, Amusement Today's editor and publisher, said the Six Flags company has already purchased four of the Tornado slides for its parks for 2004.
It's logical, Slade said, for the San Antonio theme park to add a new attraction to the water park since it's been several years since something has been constructed.
"Parks are always looking to enhance the overall property from year to year to keep the product new and fresh," he said. "What you typically see is if a property hasn't done anything to its water park in a couple years, they look for some new technology to put forth."
The Tornado is Fiesta Texas' largest capital improvement since it added the Scooby-Doo Ghostblasters ride last March.
Spokeswoman Sydne Purvis didn't reveal the ride's price but referred to it as a "major investment."
Proslide will design a blue and yellow checkerboard Tornado for Fiesta Texas.
Riders will begin their cruise 75 feet in the air by blasting down a 132-foot long tunnel that leads to the funnel.
Splashing back and forth on 5,000 gallons of recycled water, the ride ends through the mouth of the funnel in a catch pool below.
The ride has a capacity of 700 passengers per hour.
