Six Flags Seeks Exemption From Child Labor Laws
(On Air - June 14, 2002)

A Legislative committee is considering a bid by an Agawam amusement park for legislation that would allow it to seek an exemption from child labor laws.

Officials at the Six Flags New England park want 16 and 17 year-olds to be allowed to work until midnight. In addition to the legislation the park would need a waiver from state Attorney General Tom Reilly.

Now 16 and 17 year-olds can't work beyond 10 p.m. except at restaurants and race tracks.

Ronald Seavert, vice president and general manager of the park, told state lawmakers at a hearing in Boston that about a third of the 3,000 seasonal workers at the park are 16 and 17 years-old.
